Intercultural Communication

Course description:

In this workshop, we will explore how our cultural or multi-cultural background defines our behavior, especially our communicative behavior, e.g. body language, tone of voice, turn-taking points, eye contact. And we aim to understand how misunderstandings in intercultural communications occur and how we can minimize them. Feedback and video-feedback will help us get to know our own characteristics in communicative situations and adjust them for an international context. Some models and maxims about communication will help us understand why we often misunderstand each other and how we can try to understand each other better. Lecturers and PhD students with a not-entirely-German cultural background are especially welcome to this course.

By participating in this workshop, you will be able to...

1. explain how your cultural background influences your own communication.

2. understand why cultural misunderstandings occur.

3. reflect your own way of communicating and use your skills in an intercultural context.
