The Course

The Course:

Introduction

The introductory training serves as a foundation for tutors in their role. This training imparts didactic basics, including defining and understanding the role of a tutor, shaping the relationship with students, an introduction to learning processes and their promotion, creating a learning atmosphere, and familiarising with various didactic methods.

Application

Leading tutorial courses may raise questions and problems that you may not be able to or wish to resolve alone. Here, the exchange and the clear perspective from the outside helps. Both new and experienced tutors present their concerns here to find solutions together. Typical challenges and questions that occupy tutors include:

  • "How do I deal with disruptions in tutorials?"
  • "What can I do if nobody participates or only a few do?"
  • "How do I behave when my professional competence is questioned?"
  • "What do I do if there is a clear difference in students' levels of knowledge?"
  • "How can I grade fairly?"
  • "Is my approach correct?"

You will discuss, following the guided method of "Collegial Practice Counselling", the experiences you have had in your tutorials and work on individual cases or develop tips for (teaching) situations in which you are still uncertain.

Collegial Practice Counselling is also valuable for those who have only had good experiences in tutorial courses: on one hand, you take on the "consultant role," and on the other hand, you develop potential strategies for dealing with situations that could arise in the future.

Workshops

In the two-hour workshops, you can deepen your knowledge of leading tutorials. The range of workshops is extensive and available in both German and English. You have the opportunity to choose from the entire range and decide on three workshops that best meet your needs and interests.

Conclusion

Teaching is not limited to planning and implementing courses. Equally important is the reflection after completing a course. This includes questioning teaching methods, defining learning objectives, and evaluating communication with students. It is also advisable to regularly reconsider the use of digital tools. To deepen this reflection process, exchanging with colleagues in a peer format is an effective method.

The tutor qualification follows the approach of "learning with and from each other". At the end of the semester, tutors have the opportunity to reflect on their teaching in a protected setting and to exchange ideas with like-minded people. In digital meetings, tutors from JLU discuss with those from Philipps University of Marburg. They share experiences, compare applied teaching methods, and discuss their didactic approaches in order to learn from each other and to expand their skills.
