Guest lecture with K. Allison Hammer: “America´s Holy War Against Transgender Communities”

We would like to direct your attention to a talk held by K. Allison Hammer (Assistant Professor, Coordinator, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale) in Prof. Greta Olson's lecture series "The United States in the Twentieth Century: Law, Citizenship, Music, Literature, Media". The guest lecture will be held via Zoom on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 4pm.

Allison Hammer, PhD, will give a talk entitled be “America’s Holy War Against Transgender Communities.” They will discuss the current anti-trans moral and sex panic in the United States, which has resulted in widespread legislation, book banning, and viral disinformation campaigns. Continuing with themes from their upcoming book, Masculinity in Transition, Hammer proposes that while this panic appears to be a new phenomenon, it is a historically rooted panic that began in the postwar period, as evidenced by similarities in tactics used then and now. Further, Hammer asserts that from the mid-twentieth century forward, the need for total American economic and military domination has required the policing of the gender binary and control over the population’s reproductive capacities.
