Academic papers
At the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the allocation of proseminar, seminar and thesis places is based on a uniform allocation procedure. This ensures that all students receive a place in the desired semester. However, as the supervision capacities of the individual chairs are limited, not all students can write with their desired chair.
Course of the procedure
- During the application period, students submit their application for a supervision slot online. When applying, all professorships are ranked in order of preference. The professorship with which you would prefer to write is ranked first. You can choose from all professorships where supervision is possible under examination law.
- The chairs receive a list of all applications for which they were named as first preference. Among these applications, the chairs can award wildcard places. Students who receive a wildcard place are assigned to their preferred professorship (1st preference) before the actual allocation procedure.
- At the end of the application phase, all applications will be sorted in random order.
- All students who have not received a joker place will now be allocated a slot. The allocation process begins with the person who is in first place in the random order of applications. This application is considered first and the person receives a place at their preferred professorship (preference 1).
- Next, the application in second place in the random order is considered, and so on. As soon as the allocation to the first preference is no longer possible because the professorship's capacities are already fully occupied, the allocation is made to the second preference. If there are no more places available here either, allocation is made to the third preference, and so on.
Students must complete an online form during the application period. Please make sure that you fill in the correct form.
- The online forms (Application only possible during the application period)
Please note the following points when completing the form:
- Only applications submitted by the deadline will be considered. The application period can be found in the schedule of deadlines .
- Enter all required preferences.
- Name each chair only once.
- Check your matriculation number carefully.
- Enter your JLU e-mail address. Do not enter a private email address.

- You will receive an automatic confirmation email.
If you would like to participate in the allocation of the Joker places, please also upload your transcript of records via StudIP. Your transcript of records will be forwarded to your preferred chair (1st preference). You are not obliged to upload a transcript of records. You will also be allocated a place if you only complete the online form.
Please note: Students of the Master's program EGR who want to attend an EGR seminar do not need to upload a transcript of records in StudIP, as there are no joker spots available for the EGR seminars.

Submission within the deadline
If you do not hand in the thesis/(pro-)seminar paper within the deadline, you will fail the examination.
The thesis must only be submitted to the supervising chair in electronic form. Do not simply drop your thesis (e.g. on a USB stick) into the professor's mailbox! The
mailboxes are not deadline mailboxes and it is therefore not possible to prove that you have submitted your work on time. Send your work by e-mail. Make sure that the JLU does not send ZIP files.
Attachments in ZIP format will be deleted!
Evaluation
After completion of the procedure, the allocation of the slots for academic papers will be published on this page.
- Allocation academic papers winter term 2025
- Allocation academic papers winter term 2024/25
- Allocation academic papers summer term 2024
Dissatisfaction with the allocated slot
Unfortunately, we cannot allocate the desired slot in all cases. If you are not satisfied with your slot, you do not have to take it. However, we cannot offer you another slot that corresponds more closely to your preferences and there is no succession procedure. Please deregister with the professorship if you do not wish to take up the allocated slot.
Return of the thesis topic
If you do not wish to work on the topic you have received for your thesis, you can return it once until half of the regular processing time has passed. In this case, a new topic will be assigned immediately and the processing time will start again. It is not possible to return the topic again.
