The Archaic Pottery Finds from the Sanctuary in Kalapodi

The aim of this project is to study the Archaic pottery uncovered during excavation campaigns conducted by the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute at the sanctuary of Kalapodi (Phokis) between 2004 and 2013 under the direction of Prof. Dr W. D. Niemeier, and in 2014 under the direction of Prof. Dr Katja Sporn. The research includes both typological and statistical analyses.

In addition to imported ceramics, particularly from major production centres of the Archaic period such as Corinth and Athens, the sanctuary also yielded a substantial quantity of locally produced pottery, including plain and monochrome-painted wares.

By analysing this material, the project seeks to clarify the relationship between imported and local pottery and thereby contribute to a better understanding of the regional and supraregional significance of the sanctuary during the Archaic period. The study further examines the range of vessel shapes and types used within the sanctuary context and their connection to ritual practices. At the same time, it aims to provide new insights into the development of local ceramic production through comparison with material from neighbouring regions and other archaeological sites.
