The Archaic Pottery Finds from the Sanctuary in Kalapodi

The objective of this project is to evaluate the archaic pottery discovered during excavation campaigns conducted by the German Archaeological Institute's Athens Department at the sanctuary of Kalapodi (Phokis) from 2004 to 2013 under the direction of Prof. Dr. W.D. Niemeier, and in 2014 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Katja Sporn. This evaluation will encompass both typological and statistical analyses.

In addition to imported ceramic artifacts, particularly from prominent production centers of the Archaic period such as Corinth and Athens, the sanctuary also yielded numerous locally produced pottery items, including simple, monochrome painted wares.

Through the evaluation of these materials, the project aims to determine the relationship between imported and local pottery, shedding light on the regional and supra-regional significance of the sanctuary during archaic times. Furthermore, the study will investigate the range of vessel forms and types used in the sanctuary context and their associated ritual practices. Additionally, it seeks to provide new insights into the development of local pottery production through comparison with findings from other sites and neighboring regions.
