In research and teaching, the chair of Turkology is closely connected to the Giessen Eastern Europe Centre (GiZo). Apart from its focus on modern Turkish language and culture, this results in specific working fields in the sphere of Turkic languages and Turkic cultures of the Soviet Union and its successor states. 

In teaching, a BA major, a BA minor, and other courses focus on intercultural aspects of studying the so-called “Turkish World”. This includes especially questions of language and cultural contact. The topics range from Turkish in Germany to contemporary Turkish literature as part of the European-influenced world literature to questions of the cultural location of Central Asia between Russia and China. 

Research at the chair of Turkology is project-oriented and, in addition to a focus on Turkish literature of the 20th century, has a clear geographic focus in northern Central Asia and European Russia.
