The JLU has a varied history. In the course of more than 400 years since its founding in 1607, the university has grown from a small scale college to a large scale research university with a broad range of study programs and fields of excellence.

With nearly 28.000 students Giessen has the highest student/citizen ratio in all of Germany. Details on the current study programs, research, history of the JLU, and much more can be found here.

The campus of the JLU spreads all over Giessen – the city is the campus and vice versa. The Department of Chemistry is part of the natural sciences campus, in the “Heinrich-Buff-Ring” (called “Natur- und Lebenswissenschaften” in German).
