Food Sociology at the University of Giessen studies food cultures and food politics. We are interested in sustainable food systems with particular interest in the cultural practices of eating as well as the socio-political organisation of food.

A particular focus of our work is on social practices relating to food, as well as on the institutional and political conditions of the food system. We analyse individual and collective action in the interplay between different actors and examine processes of policy-making in the context of the transition to more sustainable food systems.
In our research and teaching, we adopt sociological perspectives, whilst frequently taking an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach. We draw on a wide range of social science approaches, concepts and methods, and apply these empirically.

- Research

The research carried out by the Chair of Food Sociology focuses on food as an arena that is shaped by social, institutional and political factors. The main focus is on analysing the constellations of actors, social norms and power relations that structure the food system.
A particular focus is on issues of socio-ecological transformation: we investigate the conditions under which food systems can be made more sustainable and equitable, and the social conflicts and negotiation processes associated with this.
Our work is based on sociological approaches and takes an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach. Methodologically, we draw on various social science approaches and adopt an empirical approach.
