Creative teaching during the Corona-Pandemic

03 April 2020 - Our team has commenced the preparations for the summer semester that will start on 20 April 2020. Under given circumstances, normal schedules and modes of teaching are impossible. Therefore, JLU started pooling its diverse range of e-learning competences currently available in order to offer the departments help in providing alternative teaching material.

The university administration expects that during the first four to six weeks of the lecture period (starting 20 April) teaching may take place largely without face-to-face teaching and will primarily require digital elements and formats. We thus plan to use the summer semester as an opportunity to try out completely new teaching formats. All team members engaged in teaching started brainstorming, are testing new technological solutions and start realising how they need to apply their creativity to the new challenge of high-quality distance teaching.

Update: How to set up an e-learning course

15 April 2020 - One more week left for the start of the 2020 summer semester and our team members are busy with preparations of their virtual lectures and seminars. There are multiple approaches and various tools to choose from or even invent new techniques and implement new teaching methods.

JLU Giessen has past competence in creating online teaching materials, for example, in implementations of a module course on “Land governance for sustainable land use in Africa”. Team member Dr. Nozila Mukhamedova interviewed Dr. Irina Solovyeva about her experience in organizing, preparing and coordinating this e-learning module. Irina also shared her personal experience and the latest know-how on setting up virtual learning environments. The interview was conducted in Russian to make it available for ongoing SUSADICA (Structured doctoral program on “Sustainable Agricultural Development in Central Asia”) and new SDG Nexus Network collaborative partners in Central Asian countries and is also available with English subtitles.
