The central focus of the workshop is the development of practical skills of conducting biographical narrative interview. The special feature of this technique lies in the fact that the collected material is not just a sum of answers to the asked questions, but a spontaneously told und uninterrupted story in which the interviewed person reflects on the own life experience.
Participants will learn what are the underlying principles of biographical narrative interviews and how to use this method in the own research project.
The workshop will cover the following topics:
- theoretical and methodological principles of biographical narrative interviews;
- applications and limitations of the method;
- conduction of the interviews;
- ethics in the fieldwork;
- dealing with complications and failures in course of the interview;
- transcription of the interviews;
- ways of analysis.
This workshop is designed as very practical, offering participants an excellent opportunity to train different skills important for this technique of data collection. The workshop will include group discussions as well as work in pairs, f.e. to following topics: formulation of the initial question; formulation of the narrative internal and external questions; stimulation the narration and dealing with the interviewed person who answers only “yes” or “now” etc.
I will also share my own experience from doing biographical narrative interviews in Russia in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
