Science Slams are a popular and “short” format to present scientific research in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere – also off-campus, and in front of non-academic audiences. Therefore, science slams are an interesting tool for science communication that aims to address a broader public.
In this workshop we will take a closer look at this tool: What constitutes a (good) science slam(er)? Which topics are suitable for slamming and which ones maybe less? Besides these more formal questions, we will try to think of our own projects as potential slams and prepare ways to present them as such. If we feel like it, we could also consider organizing an own "real" slam.
This summer semester, five short hands-on workshops will be dedicated to the topic of short forms in the study of culture. Several aspects of academic training and practice, - especially with regard to academic communication, writing, and teaching, - will be examined to explore the ubiquity and affordances of short forms. Participants of the workshops will engage in conversation about concepts, didactic tools, and concrete ideas for using short forms in interdisciplinary academic contexts. The workshops can be attended independently of each other. Everyone interested is welcome!
