Short Forms, Big Impact: Brevity as a Tool in Research, Teaching, and Communication | Workshop: Presenting Research in Short Form: Abstract Writing

An abstract is a short and concise summary of a research project, paper, chapter or essay. It is a descriptive text based on brevity and precision: An abstract should entail pointed information about the research problem and context, keywords, methods, major findings and conclusions. This workshop aims at both discussing ‘the abstract’ as a genre and exercising abstract writing in practice.
In a first part, we will discuss the main functions, goals and uses of abstracts in academic contexts. After that, we will discuss criteria for successful abstracts on the basis of some examples and consider writing strategies. Finally, we will do feedback exercises on the abstracts of participants, who are invited to upload abstracts of their PhD projects to StudIP by 2 May 2023.

This summer semester, five short hands-on workshops will be dedicated to the topic of short forms in the study of culture. Several aspects of academic training and practice, - especially with regard to academic communication, writing, and teaching, - will be examined to explore the ubiquity and affordances of short forms. Participants of the workshops will engage in conversation about concepts, didactic tools, and concrete ideas for using short forms in interdisciplinary academic contexts. The workshops can be attended independently of each other. Everyone interested is welcome!
