The hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the possibilities of the web-based text annotation and analysis platform CATMA 6, which was developed for humanities scholars. The workshop focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of digital annotation of (literary) texts as well as the analysis and visualization of texts and annotations.

CATMA (Computer Assisted Text Markup and Analysis; https://catma.de) is a web-based open-source tool that has been developed at the University of Hamburg since 2008 and is currently used by approximately 10,000 users worldwide. The sixth version, developed in the course of the DFG project forTEXT (https://fortext.net), offers extended technical possibilities (such as data versioning and the organisation of collaborative work in a project structure), as well as a completely revised, intuitive user interface, which allows a low-threshold entry to digital text annotation and analysis without requiring extensive technical knowledge.

In the workshop we will approach the text analytical work in CATMA 6 in alternating presentation and hands-on phases. After a general introduction to the tool, the participants will be able to test the entire workflow from individual taxonomy-based text annotation, through analysis to visualization and interpretation of the text and annotation data. Participants can either use a given sample text or they can bring their own texts in digitized form.
