Iron is the main component of all steels and therefore the basis of many massive constructions. Modern steel consists of several phases and is an “element cocktail”. By adding small fractions of other elements such as Mn, Cr, Ni, or C, the properties of steel can be tuned, e.g. steel can be made stainless.
