Title: Feminist Theories of Inequality
Code: 0303
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Nikita Dhawan
Type of course: Seminar
Description: The interplay between gender and power is at the heart of feminist theory and practice. In this course we shall examine how "gender regimes" are socio-politically constituted not only at the microlevel of everyday practices, but also at the macrolevel where transnational institutions regulate the processes of gendering. We shall explore the connections between gender and power within the specific context of regional as well as global politics. The aim is to understand how gender relations are power relations. We will further investigate how thinking about gender and power from a transnational perspective allows us to redefine the nature and practice of feminist projects. The seminar will provide insight into diverse feminist approaches on the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, class and ethnicity. Through reading of major texts in transnational feminist studies, we will critically evaluate the relationship between women and nation; between gender justice and globalization; and between feminist theory and practice
