Description: This course focuses on the experience of being young in the urban context. The first part of the course will deal with the basic theoretical foundations of the sociological perspective regarding youth. The concept of generation will also be addressed as it provides one of the main grounds for understanding youth cohorts’ life worlds contextualized within specific socio-historical dynamics. In the second part of the course, several empirical-based studies concentrating upon young people with a particular focus on their experiences contextualized within the urban space will be discussed. Throughout the course, being young will be studied in relation to structural factors/inequalities such as gender, class and race as well as social processes such as globalization, individualization and migration.
