Title: Varieties of English around the World (Seminar)
Code: 0510
Lecturer: Julia Degenhardt
Type of course: Seminar
Description: The English language has spread globally since British overseas expansions started in the 17th century, which has given rise to a range of different varieties all around the world. The term World Englishes refers to any variety of English, whether it is spoken in the original "home", England, or any other part of Europe, America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific region. The concept World Englishes thus accounts for the geographical spread of English and grants official recognition to the varieties as own languages, independent of whether they function as a first or second language in the respective country.
In the course of this seminar, we will engage with theory and research on the evolution and expansion of World Englishes. We will then focus on different first language, second language and learner varieties of English by identifying them on the levels of lexis, phonology, morphology and syntax. We will thereby outline similarities and differences between these varieties by also taking into account the social and historical circumstances under which the language varieties emerged.
