Lecturer: Dr. Rer. Med. Carolyn Finck
Type of course:

Description: As humans, we are constantly involved in culturally diverse environments, and relating to people who do not necessarily share our worldview. Being able to effectively and appropriately behave in such contexts is known as "Intercultural competencies", and the first step in the promotion of these competencies is to reflect on the notion of culture.

In this class, we will analyze specific ways of structuring cultural contexts that allow us to identify and frame social and psychological processes related to the understanding among and between groups. We will talk about the way in which stereotypes serve inequality, how intersectionality can be understood and how to thrive in the context of diversity and inclusion. Our goal is to demystify what is strange to us and to unfamiliarize our own context.

The multidisciplinary perspective of the course includes debates from cross-cultural and social psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology among others. Further, the aim is to foster abilities such as observation, interviewing and ethnography and to foster an open mind, tolerance and curiosity as values central to intercultural competencies.
