Registration with the Local Authorities

Registration of your place of residence

If you move into a new place of residence in Germany you have to register with the local authorities within one week. For Giessen, this takes place at the Stadtbüro Gießen, Berliner Platz 1, Ground Floor, 35390 Gießen.

Please bring the following documents with you:

  • Filled in document "Registration of place of residence" / "Anmeldung einer Wohnung“ (type in "Anmeldung einer Wohnung" in the search box on http://www.giessen.de/Rathaus_und_Service/B%C3%BCrgerservice/Formulare/)
  • Passport or identity card
  • In case you have already been registered with a local authority in Germany (i.e., you moved to your new place of residence from another flat in Germany), please bring along your confirmation of having checked out of your former residence ("Abmeldebestätigung").    

In case you have already signed a work contract with JLU Giessen you can request the necessary certificate of good conduct when registrating with the authorities. 

If you found accommodation in a town outside of Giessen you have to register with the local authorties of the respective town. 

 Registration with the immigration authorities

Anmeldung

You have to contact the immigration authorities in person and in time before your visa expires. You can then apply for a prolongation of your residence permit. As the application process can take time, we strongly advise you to do this early enough. 
If you entered Gemany without a visa you have to apply for a residende permit after three months at the latest. 
Different documents have to be shown, depending on your home country. You will generally need: 

  • a filled in application for a prolongation of stay (type in Verlängerung der Aufenthaltserlaubnis in the search box on http://www.giessen.de/Rathaus_und_Service/B%C3%BCrgerservice/Formulare/) 
  • biometric passport photo
  • passport
  • proof of sufficient financial resources (e.g., confirmation of grant, work contract, affiliation confirmation of JLU showing monthly payments)
  • confirmation of health insurance for immigration authorities
  • tenancy agreement for your accommodation 
  • registration confirmation of your place of residence 
  • Spouse / children: marriage certificate, birth certificate in German translation
