Finding accommodation in Giessen

You will most likely need furnished accommodation. Most flats/houses in Germany come without furniture, however. You still have several options, depending on your period of stay in Giessen:

  • For short periods of stay: guest houses, hotels

If you stay only a couple of nights or weeks it is best to book a room in a guest house or hotel in Giessen.

  • For short trips and for stays up to 6 months: guest houses of the university

The university guest houses offer furnished appartments and flats up to a size of 3 rooms. You can live in a university guest house for a maximum of 6 months (flats with 2 or 3 rooms can be occupied up to a year). Reservation is made by the department of JLU which will host you (please ask your contact person at the department for details). You should apply as early as possible since the university's guest houses are ususally booked well in advance.

  • For longer periods of stay: private accommodation

If you could not secure a room in a university guest house or if you stay longer than 6 months you should search for private accommodation. Read ads carefully, furnished rooms are rare in Germany. You can browse the internet or have a look at the ads in the following Giessen newspapers:

www.giessener-anzeiger.de

You will also find lots of accommodation portals online, some may charge a handling fee, however.
