Science management refers to jobs at universities, non-university research institutions, foundations or other scientific institutions that are located at the interface between research and administration. Jobs in science management can be found, for example, in third-party funding, science communication, presidential offices and human resources development at corresponding institutions - although this list is far from exhaustive.
In recent years, there has been a stronger professionalisation, but so far there is no clear common self-image of the professional group. One consequence of this is that there are many different career paths into science management.
