This year, for the first time, donations have made it possible to award prizes for theses in the field of sustainability. All members and affiliates of Justus Liebig University Giessen are eligible to nominate candidates. Self-applications are possible.
Based on the calendar year in which the prize is awarded, the completion of the assessment of the qualification thesis may not be more than one year in the past, or two years in the first year of the award. The date of the decision of the examination committee or the doctoral committee is decisive for this.

The prize is awarded in two categories:

  1. Dissertations

The prize money in this category is €500 for a dissertation. Dissertations must have been accepted at JLU and graded at least magna cum laude (very good) or grade B (very good) in the Ph.D. procedure. The dissertation must have a thematic reference to all three dimensions of sustainability (ecological, economic, social) or to one or more sub-goals of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Moreover, the execution of the work, one's own performance and argumentation, and an interdisciplinary and solution-oriented approach will be assessed.

  1. Master's theses or academic term papers as part of the first state examination

The prize money in this category is €200 for a master's thesis or academic term paper as part of the first state examination. These papers must have been written at JLU and graded very good or at least 13 points. The thesis must be thematically related to at least one of the three dimensions of sustainability (ecological, economic, social) or to one or more sub-goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the execution of the work, one's own performance and argumentation, and a solution-oriented approach are assessed.

The proposals must be substantiated in detail and sent by May 15 of each year in electronic form (Nachhaltigkeit) with the following attachments:

  • Résumé (for dissertations: stating the date of the defense; for master's theses and academic term papers as part of the first state examination: stating the date the grade was awarded and the supervisors)
  • If available, a list of publications
  • The dissertation or master's thesis or academic term paper as part of the first state examination
  • All reports that have been prepared for the assessment of the qualification work
