Prize

The prize is named after Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Mittermaier, who, as Professor of Law in Giessen (from 1903 to 1933), courageously stood up for his students of Jewish descent against National Socialist pressure. The prize is endowed with 3,000 euros and is divisible. The donor is the Erwin Stein Foundation, named after the Hessian Minister of Culture and Justice of the 1950s, Federal Constitutional Court judge, and Honorary Senator of Justus Liebig University Giessen. The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and art. The prize is usually awarded every two years. Courses from four semesters are therefore eligible for the students' proposals.

All university lecturers in Faculties 01 - 06 who independently teach courses, lectures, courses, seminars, tutorials, etc. can be nominated. Anyone who has already received the award cannot be nominated again. You can find an overview of previous award winners on the Erwin Stein Foundation website. With the Wolfgang Mittermaier Prize, Justus Liebig University would like to recognize and award special achievements in academic teaching. In this context, the education for research-based thinking and academic responsibility, as well as the promotion of tolerance and international understanding, should also be taken into account. The prize is also intended as an incentive for other university lecturers to constantly optimize the quality of their teaching.

All properly enrolled students from Faculties 01 - 06 can submit nominations. Suggestion forms are distributed at the end of each semester, made available starting in February or for the summer semester starting in July, or are available from all institute secretaries. By submitting a proposal, students can contribute to the design, quality assurance, and optimization of teaching and participate directly in its assessment.

The nomination form should be sent directly to the president of Justus Liebig University Giessen (the address is on the nomination form). You have the option of handing in an appropriately addressed letter to any institute secretary's office or to the library supervisors for delivery via internal post. The deadline for submission is March 1 for courses in the winter semester and August 1 for courses in the summer semester.

A committee consisting of the representative of the Erwin Stein Foundation, the president, four students, and three professors decides on awarding the prize.

More information on the award procedure can be found in the statutes for awarding the Wolfgang Mittermaier Prize for outstanding achievements in academic teaching at Justus Liebig University Giessen.
