Abstract of Area of Potential

Since around 2009, concepts and notions of conflict and violence have been culturally studied at JLU both in historical and current political contexts—particularly in Eastern Europe. The collaboration between GiZo (Giessen Center for Eastern Europe), DiML (Center for Diversity, Media, and Law), and RCSC (Research Center for the Study of Culture) enables the integration of fundamental cultural studies expertise. Cooperation with the Herder Institute for Historical East Central European Research, a Leibniz Institute in Marburg, has significantly expanded the potential area’s capabilities in scientific infrastructures and digital humanities.
The performance of this potential area is also underlined by its broadly based third-party funding (SFB/TRR 138 – Dynamics of Security, the applied-for CRC “Conflict Communities”). Participation in the BMBF project “Transformations of Political Violence (TraCe)” additionally provides the area with great visibility nationally and internationally.
The research group “Human Rights Discourses in the Migration Society,” the German-Colombian Peace Institute (CAPAZ), and involvement in the SDGnexus Network of the ZEU deliver important knowledge transfer to politics and society due to their topical relevance.
Finally, the potential area shows significant overlaps with JLU’s activities within the framework of the European University Networks “EUPeace – European University for Peace, Justice, and Inclusive Societies.”
