Subjects

Teaching subjects

For the two subjects they choose, students cover both the direct study of the particular subjects and the study of how those subjects can be taught in schools. For all subjects, this is done with a view to teaching Years 5-10 at all types of school, from purely lower-secondary schools to comprehensive schools (Gesamtschulen) to grammar schools.

For a degree in lower-secondary education, each student must choose two subjects from the following list (each subject can be combined with any other):

  • Work Studies
  • Biology 3
  • Chemistry
  • German 3
  • English 1
  • Geography
  • Ethics
  • Protestant Theology 4
  • French 1
  • History
  • Computer Science
  • Catholic Theology4
  • Art 2
  • Mathematics 3
  • Music 2
  • Physics 3
  • Politics and Economics
  • Russian
  • Sport 2

Information on the contents of each subject can be found in the module plans and descriptions.

Justus Liebig University provides clash-free timetabling of teacher-training courses which are planned for the same semester. This is to ensure that our education degrees can really be completed in the standard number of semesters. In order to achieve this, however, subjects which students have to date rarely chosen to combine have had to be scheduled simultaneously. JLU can therefore no longer support the combination of these subjects, with the result that it may not be possible for students who choose them to complete their degrees in the standard time. These unguaranteed combinations are as follows:

  • Chemistry/Russian
  • German/Chemistry
  • Physics/French
  • Geography/Physics
  • Geography/French
  • History/Physics
  • Art/Work Studies
  • Music/Art
  • Music/Work Studies
  • Politics and Economics/Chemistry
  • Politics and Economics/Russian
  • Protestant or Catholic Theology/Geography
  • Protestant or Catholic Theology/French
  • Protestant or Catholic Theology/Physics
  • Ethics/Catholic Theology
  • Ethics/Protestant Theology
  • Ethics/Geography
  • Ethics/Physics
  • Ethics/French

Students who choose to combine three or more subjects as part of a degree in lower-secondary education must expect to find it very difficult to complete the programme in the standard time, not only in the face of very high students numbers but also because JLU cannot guarantee that timetabling will be clash-free in such cases.

The university does not prohibit the above subject combinations, though it cannot guarantee that the standard number of semesters can be upheld. Any student wishing to take one of these combinations at his or her own risk may do so.
