Animal research

Animal research is a very contentious topic and the definition is controversially discussed. In the broadest sense, however, animal research either in the laboratory or on wildlife is essential for science. We aim to impart knowledge on basics and requirements for animal research using wildlife. Legal basics, keeping conditions, biometric planning and the ethics behind animal research are discussed. The course “Animal research using wildlife” is the advanced course of the module “Science of mammals”. The successful completion of both courses is awarded with the certificate “Animal research on wildlife”. This certificate serves to proof the expertise and competence for animal research (§ 9 Abs. 1 German Animal Protection Law) for the responsible permit authorities. This expertise course is conducted at the Department of Animal Ecology & Systematics (Mammalian Ecology Group) in consultation with the Hessian Regional Administrative Council and the animal welfare officer of the JLU.
