Teaching Certification for 'Haupt- und Realschule' (L2)

Deko

In the L2 teacher training program, students acquire a solid foundation in mathematics and its pedagogy for teaching at secondary schools. In addition to subject-specific content, aspects of subject pedagogy and educational science play a central role. The program provides practical preparation for the first state examination and subsequent teaching careers.

  • Degree: First State Examination (Teacher Certification)
  • Standard duration of study: approx. 3 years (180 credits) + 1 semester of preparation for the State Examination
  • Start of studies: Usually in the winter semester
  • Curriculum: Combination of specialized mathematics + subject didactics + educational sciences; specific subject-related modules available for L2
  • Admission: Subject to local admission restrictions; admission is granted in accordance with the Hessian Higher Education Admission Ordinance

Teaching Certification for 'Gymnasiallehramt'  (L3)

Deko

The L3 program provides in-depth mathematical expertise combined with subject-specific pedagogy, educational science, and practical school experience. Students learn to convey complex mathematical concepts in an accessible way and acquire a broad academic foundation for teaching at high schools. The program culminates in the First State Examination.

  • Degree: First State Examination (Teacher Certification)
  • Standard duration of study: approx. 9 semesters
  • Start of program: typically the winter semester
  • Curriculum: The program combines two teaching subjects, practical school training, and basic sciences; some modules are offered jointly with bachelor’s students
  • Admission: Subject to local admission restrictions; admission is granted in accordance with the Hessian Higher Education Admission Ordinance.

Teaching Certification for 'Förderpädagogik' (L5)

The L5 program combines training in mathematics with a solid foundation in special education and remedial instruction. Students develop the skills needed to support mathematical learning processes on an individual basis and adapt them to different learning needs. The program culminates in the First State Examination for teaching at special education schools.

  • Degree: First State Examination (Teacher Certification in Special Education)
  • Standard duration of study: approx. 4 years (240 credits) + 1 semester of preparation for the state examination, or 9 semesters in total
  • Start of studies: Usually in the winter semester
  • Curriculum: Focus on special education, including components in subject-specific pedagogy and special education
  • Admission: Subject to local admission restrictions; admission is granted in accordance with the Hessian Higher Education Admission Ordinance.

Bachelor Applied Mathematics (B.Sc.)

Deko Banner Angewandte Mathematik

The Bachelor’s program in Applied Mathematics provides a solid foundation in mathematics and specifically combines this with the solution of complex problems in engineering, business, and data analysis. Thanks to its flexible structure and various areas of focus, the program allows students to pursue individualized specialization at the intersection of theory and practice.

  • Degree: Bachelor of Science
  • Standard duration of study: 6 semesters / 180 CP
  • Start of studies: Winter semester
  • Curriculum : Fundamentals of calculus and linear algebra; advanced courses in numerical methods, optimization, and stochastics; a programming course and statistics; a required elective specialization (e.g., computer science, AI, economics, or statistics).
  • Admission: No enrollment cap

Credit Points

One credit point (CP) corresponds to a time commitment of 25–30 hours. The scope of courses is specified in semester hours (SWS); one SWS thus corresponds to approximately 15 hours over the entire semester. In many mathematics courses, 3 CP are awarded for every 2 SWS, reflecting the expectation that one hour of class time requires an equal amount of preparation and follow-up work.

Level of abstraction

In addition to the scope of the mathematics modules, the level of abstraction also plays a role in choosing a degree program:

  • The level of abstraction targeted in the L3 program is slightly lower than in the Bachelor’s/Master’s in Mathematics. However, since L3 students—unlike BSc/MSc students—cannot devote themselves entirely to mathematics, they do not necessarily perceive this as easier.
  • The mathematical component of the L2 and L5 programs is identical and considerably more concrete than in the L3 program, and thus closer to high school mathematics.
  • The level of abstraction in the Bachelor’s/Master’s in Data Science lies between that of an L3 program and that of an L2/L5 program.
