Studies
The ‘Advanced Materials’ degree programmes (B.Sc./M.Sc.) at Justus Liebig University Giessen combine chemistry and physics into a modern, interdisciplinary programme focusing on innovative functional materials.
In the course you will learn:
- how materials operate at the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic levels,
- how to specifically tailor their properties for particular applications,
- and how state-of-the-art methods – from electron microscopy to spectroscopy – are used to characterise and further develop new materials.
The emphasis is on practical relevance: you will conduct research in the laboratory, learn the latest analytical techniques and play an active role in shaping the materials of the future. The programme is closely integrated with current materials research at the University of Giessen, enabling you to develop your skills in a professional environment.

Advanced Materials is ideal for anyone interested in the natural sciences but who doesn’t want to commit to physics or chemistry. The course offers insights into many fascinating fields – from energy storage to semiconductor physics – and combines theory with plenty of practical laboratory work. It also opens up a wide range of career paths in research and industry.

Double Degree: Study abroad – get double the benefits!
The Advanced Materials Master’s programme offers you a unique opportunity to gain international research experience whilst earning two Master’s degrees – one from Justus Liebig University Giessen and one from a partner university abroad.
During the two-year Master’s programme, you will spend one year at the partner university, attend English-language courses and actively participate in international research groups. The programme is structured in such a way that it does not extend the duration of your studies.
The following partner universities are available to choose from:
Padova University
Osaka University
Kansai University
You can easily apply for the double-degree programme whilst you’re already studying for your Master’s degree – so you can start your current course first and decide later whether you’d like to pursue an international path. An information event held at the start of the winter semester will provide all the details.
Expand your horizons – and launch your academic career on a global stage!
