Research Area 1: Cultural Memory Studies

Research Area 1 aims to explore the field of cultural memory studies from conceptual, theoretical, and methodological perspectives. Rooted in Maurice Halbwachs’s seminal work, the concept of cultural memory has sparked heated debates regarding its applicability within Cultural Studies. Despite criticism concerning the term’s broadness, we align our research area with Astrid Erll’s idea that the methodological power of cultural memory lies in its dynamic, media-based approach to objects and themes of memory.
Building on the strong tradition of cultural memory studies in Giessen, our group seeks to engage with emerging approaches in the field, fostering critical, interdisciplinary dialogues that also acknowledge formalist perspectives. In the 2026 Summer Semester, Research Area 1 will, therefore, focus on media and form as carriers of cultural memory, expanding its scope to examine how memory is shaped through diverse media such as literature, film, and archival materials.
We will pay particular attention to underrepresented perspectives and disruptive approaches. All events organised this semester (reading groups, internal presentations, and brainstorming sessions) are dedicated to discussing, exchanging, and expanding (alternative) forms of knowledge production related to cultural memory. These activities will serve as a methodological preamble for future events in the 2026–2027 Winter Semester.
We welcome all prospective members interested in cultural memory studies to join the conversation and contribute to our collaborative work.
