Integration, Gender & Culture in Post-migrant Society:

Negotiating the Social Category of Turkish Women in Germany

This research project focuses on the interplay between gender and migration discourses with regards to perceptions of cultural difference and studies how this social configuration is reflected in the policies, practices, and experiences of integration specifically in the case of “Turkish migrant women” in Germany. The ways in which gender-based discourses and relations function in the construction/continuance of the category of migrant as well as in the migrant-host dichotomy, particularly regarding the post-migrant context in which the so-called migrants are actually long-settled inhabitants of the society, stands as one of the main spotlights of the project. This research conceptualizes integration as one of the fields of negotiations in society and interprets this field as a dynamic process wherein not only Turkish migrants but also the ‘host’ society continuously reflect on and (re)construct their relationships with one another. From this perspective, the project intends to decipher the complex construction of discursive knowledge by which understandings of ‘us’ and ‘them’ are produced, particularly with regard to issues of culture and diversity in the post-migrant society.
