For candidates who have chosen the option ‘prose’:

Prose text of about 270 words by

a. Cicero, Caesar, Sallust, Livy, Seneca phil., Tacitus, Pliny minor, Suetonius

b. Herodotus, Lysias, Plato, Xenophon, Isocrates, Chariton, Lucian, Dio of Prusa

or

for candidates who have chosen the option ’poetry:’

a lyric text of about 40 verses by

a. Terence, Catullus, Virgil, Propertius, Ovid, Seneca trag., Martial, Claudian

b. Homer, Anacreontea, Archilochus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Menander, Anthologia Graeca

each with a determination of origin based on linguistic-stylistic-content-related and possibly metrical analysis, commenting, classification into the literary, cultural and mentality-historic context; Explanation of generic and author-specific idiosyncrasies and the like.

• Oral:

1. Unknown text of about 80 words from the selection named above of prose or poetry, depending on the focus of the known text

Preparation time: 30 minutes

2. Known text from the assignment agreed upon with the lecturer

The list of authors is not intended as an assignment. It is merely a concession to the candidates, intended to facilitate the prioritisation of individual reading during the entire (!) course of study and the acute exam preparation (refresher literary-historical knowledge and the like). Accordingly, the list is not to be interpreted in such a way that dealing with other eras, authors, and genres is obsolete.
