Taught in German.

Master of Science (MSc)

Duration of studies

4 semestes - 120 credit points (cp)

since September 29, 2006

Entrance requirements

The entry prerequisite for the Master degree programme Mathematics is the completion of a Bachelor degree in Mathematics. The decision on whether or not other courses of studies match the required profile is taken by the faculty board of examiners. In the required Bachelor degree course a minimum of 138 credit points in Mathematics modules have to be obtained.
The faculty board of examiners decides on exceptions and examines the entrance requirements.

Application and admission

  • This course of study is not limited internally by the JLU.
  • The general application deadlines of the JLU Gießen end by 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester.
  • Please note that the application period for the Master's course can be extended. This information will be published here (in German).
  • Special regulations apply to foreign applicants or those who gained their university-entrance qualifications abroad. More on this...

Commencement of studies

The degree programme starts in the winter semester. A start in the summer semester is possible on condition that a study advisor confirms that studies can be completed within the standard period of study.

A minimum total of 120 credit points must be acquired, in at least 12 and at most 20 modules.
In the degree course, a minimum of 96 credit points must be acquired in mathematics modules (including the thesis module), and one minor subject worth at least 18 credit points must be taken, in accordance with the regulations governing minor subjects.
The mathematics modules:
A minimum of 15 credit points must be acquired in each of the areas of algebra/analysis/geometry (aag) and applied mathematics/stochastics (AMS). In addition, at least 21 credit points must be acquired in a specialisation and 30 credit points in the thesis module. One seminar or literature review module must be successfully completed, and there is also the option of a work placement module (in a field of employment or professional activity).
Specialisations can be selected in the following areas:

  • Algebra
  • Analysis
  • Geometry
  • Numerical Mathematics
  • Stochastics
  • Financial Mathematics.

Possible minor subjects are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Geography
  • Computer Science
  • Philosophy
  • Theoretical Physics
  • Experimental Physics
  • Economics and Business Studies.
In addition, if the above conditions are met, supplementary modules can be freely chosen.
The master's thesis in the selected specialisation illustrates the ability to conduct scientific work independently and marks the formal end of the degree course.
