Overview

The dentistry degree programme provides you with scientifically sound foundational knowledge and practical skills for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the teeth, mouth and jaw. You will be prepared for a career in dentistry in a way that is practical and patient-centred. In Giessen, you can expect a particularly wide range of subjects, combined with personalised support.

Composition of the Study Programme

What can I expect from this programme?

The study of dentistry is uniformly organised in the Federal Republic of Germany through the approbation regulation (Approbationsordnung). 

The aim of the is to acquire the knowledge and skills that enable a dental license. It is designed to provide basic knowledge, skills and abilities in the respective dental subjects which are required to provide health care to the public. The dentistry program is scientifically based and practice- and patient-oriented.

 

What skills and interests should I have?

Prerequisites for a successful study of dentistry are good scientific knowledge in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics as well as a basic understanding of medicine and the natural sciences. Knowledge of Latin is no longer required, but is helpful in any case.

How is the programme structured?

First section of the study (1st-4th semester)


The first section of the study includes the following subjects:

  • Exercise med. terminology
  • Practical course physics for students of dentistry
  • Practical course chemistry for students of dentistry
  • Biology
  • Practical course macroscopic anatomy
  • Practical course microscopic anatomy
  • Practical course physiology
  • Practical course biochemistry and molecular biology
  • Practical course dental propaedeutics with emphasis on preventive dentistry
  • Dental propaedeutics course with emphasis on dental technology
  • Practical course professional field exploration elective preclinical section 

Internship: A one-month nursing internship must be completed before the start of the studies or during the lecture-free period in the first section of the degree. A first aid course must also be completed. Both are required for the registration for the first exam in dentistry.
 

The first exam in dentistry includes the following subjects:


Physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, microscopic and macroscopic anatomy, physiology, dental propaedeutics.

 

Second section of the study (5th - 6th semester)

  • Practical course dental prosthodontics on the phantom
  • Practical course dental prosthodontics on phantom
  • Practical course orthodontic propaedeutics and prophylaxis
  • Practical course dental-surgical propaedeutics and emergency medicine
  • Radiological practical course

The second exam in dentistry includes the following subjects:


Dental prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental preservation subject group (endodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontology and tooth structure science, prevention and restoration).

 

Third section of the study (7th - 10th semester)

  • Practical course in the Clinic or Polyclinic for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases I and II
  • Practical course in dental diagnostics and treatment planning
  • Surgery course I and II
  • Practical course orthodontic diagnostics and therapy I and II
  • Integrated treatment courses I to IV
  • Radiological practical course
  • Professional knowledge and practice management
  • Pharmacology and toxicology
  • Pathology
  • Subject Hygiene, Microbiology and Virology
  • Internal medicine including immunology
  • Dermatology and Allergology
  • Cross-sectional area of clinical materials science
  • Cross-sectional area of emergency medicine
  • Cross-sectional area of pain medicine
  • Cross-sectional area of medicine and dentistry of aging and the elderly
  • Cross-sectional area of oral medicine and systemic aspects
  • Cross-sectional area of diseases of the head and neck
  • Cross-sectional area of health sciences with emphasis on epidemiology, prevention, health promotion, public health nursing, health economics, ethics and history of medicine and dentistry
  • Cross-sectional area of scientific work with emphasis on medical biometrics, medical informatics, literature review and evaluation, and evidence-based medicine
  • Elective course

The third exam in dentistry includes the following subjects:

  • Oral-practical part: dental prosthodontics, orthodontics, dental, oral and maxillofacial diseases, oral surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental radiology, group of subjects dental preservation (endodontology, pediatric dentistry, periodontology and tooth structure science, prevention and restoration).
  • Written part: pharmacology and toxicology, pathology, hygiene, microbiology and virology, internal medicine, dermatology and allergology. Cross-sectional areas (Emergency Medicine, Pain Medicine, Medicine and Dentistry of Aging and the Elderly, Clinical Materials Science, Oral Medicine and Systemic Aspects, Diseases of the Head and Neck, Health Sciences with emphasis on epidemiology, prevention, health promotion, public health nursing, health economics, ethics and history of medicine and dentistry Scientific work with emphasis on medical biometry, medical informatics, literature research and evaluation and evidence-based medicine.

Career Options

Can I go on to do doctoral studies?

In general, the prerequisite for embarking on doctoral studies is a successfully completed university degree. The doctoral course of study will be completed with the written dissertation and an oral exam (disputation). Having been conferred a doctorate, you are allowed to bear the title “Dr.med. dent.”.

What career paths can I pursue after graduation?

  • as a practising dentist, a hospital dentist, in public health offices, as an examining dentist for medical and pension insurance, a company dentist, an army dental officer
  • employment with professional associations and with professional journals
  • employment in research and teaching at universities and in institutions outside universities

The intake capacity of this degree programme is limited throughout the Federal Republic of Germany.

Requirements

A valid university entrance qualification (German: HZB) is required for admission to the program.

Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification should also note the required proof of German language proficiency .

Application deadlines

for a winter semester

  • May 31st for "old school graduates" who acquired their university entrance qualification (Abitur) before January 16 of the current year.
  • July 15th for "newly school graduated" who acquired their university entrance qualification (Abitur) after January 15 up to (and including) July 15 of the current year.

for a summer semester

  • January 15th for both "old" and "new" graduates.
