Arrangement of single Molecules

This picture shows individual carbonmonoxide molecules on a copper surface imaged by scanning probe microscopy at -268 °C, only 5 K above absolute zero temperature. The molecules were arranged one by one to constitute the JLU logo by Dr. Qigang Zhong (AG Prof. Schirmeisen) using atomic manipulation techniques. Modern scanning probe based imaging and manipulation methods are believed to give new insights into the molecular mechanisms of on-surface chemical reactions.
