Java updates will be subject to a charge as of 2019

Java technology is very widespread and is also used at JLU. Until now, the installation and use of Java was free of charge. The manufacturer Oracle is now changing this as of 2019, and software updates will be subject to a charge from this date.

JLU is required to correctly license all Java installations used.

To avoid unnecessary costs, all existing Java installations that are not (or no longer) required must be removed from the relevant work computers.

What does this mean in concrete terms for users of a work computer?

This gives rise to questions such as these:

  • How do I find out if Java is installed on my computer?
  • How do I find out if I really need Java?
  • How much does it cost to subscribe to Java updates?
  • How can I uninstall Java?
  • etc.
