Many scientists realize at some point that the topic of parenthood/motherhood is becoming increasingly relevant in their own lives. This may be due to friends becoming parents, relatives who won't stop asking questions, social pressure, or an intrinsic desire to have children. We are often alone with these thoughts and only discuss them with our partners, wondering where they come from, what they mean, and where they will lead. In academia in particular, there are few spaces where one's own position on the desire to have children can be openly discussed and reflected upon. We are changing that with this workshop. Together, we are creating a space for discussing the desire (or lack thereof) to have children. In addition to individual empowerment through (written) reflection, we will examine and analyze the structural conditions for people with children (or the desire to have children) in academia. The exchange with other scientists also promotes politicization and solidarity.

Target group: 

scientists who want to address the topic of children or of the desire to have children in academia and are looking for a space to do so

Goals: 

  • Create space for solidarity-based discussion of one's own position on the topic of the desire to have children
  • Raise awareness of the structural conditions of parenthood, and especially motherhood, in academia
  • Empowerment, solidarity, and politicization
