Workshop "Infrastructures of Publishing & Critiquing", 3.‒5. April 2023, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb
International workshop within the framework of the research group "(Un)Mapping Infrastructures: Transnational Perspectives on Modern Art, 1900-1970" in cooperation with the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb
Organizers: Leonida Kovač (Zagreb), Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes (Amsterdam), Annabel Ruckdeschel (Giessen)
Workshop location: Museum of Contemporary Art, Av. Dubrovnik 17, 10010 Zagreb, ŠKOLICA (ground floor)
The workshop enquires into infrastructures of publishing and critiquing in (and of) modern art with a special focus on the Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and its broader transnational relations. It will examine transregional networks, material conditions, institutions, and relationships that shaped and enabled forms of publication and criticism in the field of art. Infrastructures of publishing and critiquing provide material, social, media and communicative as well as institutional resources. All of these infrastructural dimensions must be available for publishing and critiquing: Without material infrastructures (paper, printing possibilities), social relations (favorable position in networks), media and communicative conditions (postal system, radio, newspapers), and sponsoring institutions (both public and unofficial museums, archives, publishers, groupings), publishing and critiquing would be impossible. Conversely, the concrete shape of specific infrastructures of publishing and critiquing can only be described if these aspects are investigated. A perspective on infrastructures of publishing and critiquing illuminates blind spots and thus far neglected aspects pertaining to art and its interactions with societal processes. Infrastructures established in the past provide instances for re-use, emulation, contestation, experiment and appropriation. They also constitute openings for (us as) art world actors to guide future potentialities.
