Institute of Experimental and Translational Cardiology
Welcome to the Institute of Experimental and Translational Cardiology
The Institute of Experimental and Translational Cardiology is dedicated to the study of cardiovascular diseases, with a strong focus on translational basic research. Our work centers on the molecular and cellular analysis of disease-relevant mechanisms and their integration with clinical studies.
The research focuses on the mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiac regeneration, and metabolic aspects of genetic and non-genetic diseases. With the appointment of Prof. Dr. med. Sossalla to the Chair of Cardiology and Angiology at Justus Liebig University Giessen on September 1, 2023, alongside his role as Head of Department at the Kerckhoff Clinic, and the appointment of Prof. Dr. Laura Zelarayán as Director of the newly established Institute of Experimental and Translational Cardiology on June 1, 2026, this research profile has been strategically strengthened and expanded.
By closely integrating experimental models—including humanized systems and stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes—with cutting-edge single-cell technologies, advanced tissue platforms, and clinical cohorts, we create a comprehensive research environment. This enables the development of novel, disease-specific, and personalized therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases.
Our goal is to drive sustainable advances in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention through excellence in research, ultimately improving cardiovascular health.
