Über Dr. Elisa Ferrè

Dr. Ferrè established the Vestibular Neuroscience laboratory at Birkbeck University of London (UK) in 2021 and is Reader in Cognitive Neuroscience. Her research focusses on the influence of gravity and the vestibular system on perception and cognition, thereby extending to the space sector. Among others, she holds a grant from the European Space Agency (ESA) and is coordinator of the UK Space Life and Biomedical Sciences Association. In her work she applies a wide range of methods ranging from psychophysics over virtual reality and vestibular physiology to neuroscience. Her research has thereby an important impact in understanding vestibular processes extending to applications for future space missions.

Vortrag: Unravelling the Vestibular System: Encoding, Integration, and Cognition

The vestibular system has a pivotal role in our daily experiences. Three orthogonal semicircular canals detect rotational movements of the head in space and the otolith organs sense translational acceleration, including gravity. Yet, the mechanism by which the human brain encodes vestibular signals remains unclear. We have combined innovative methods for eliciting virtual rotation and translation sensations with fMRI to identify brain areas for vestibular signalling. Our results showed a bilateral inferior parietal, ventral premotor/anterior insula and prefrontal network involved in the independent processing of rotation and translation vestibular sensations. We have also investigated how vestibular signals are integrated with other sensory cues to generate our perception of the terrestrial environment.

If you would like to talk to Elisa or show her your work after her talk, please contact Pierre-Pascal (Pierre.P.Forster@psychol.uni-giessen.de) to arrange a time and place.
