The IMPACCT project, closely linked with the European University Alliance EUPeace (European University for Peace, Justice, and Inclusive Societies), focuses on promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue in connection with the themes of peace, justice, and inclusion. As part of this initiative, the project enables students in the primary school teacher education programme (L1) studying Islamic or Catholic Religious Education and General Studies to take part in supported stays abroad at partner universities in Austria, Sweden, and Türkiye. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with support from the former Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), now the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), as part of its third funding phase from 2025 to 2029.

Project Background

Through its Lehramt.International programme, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) specifically promotes the internationalization of teacher education. The programme is based on the principle that “teachers must be able to understand global developments and their effects on society in the light of their own experiences and communicate them authentically.” (see programme background)

Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) has been part of the Lehramt.International programme since its launch in 2019 through the model project IMPACCT (International Mobility with Partners Abroad for Culturally Competent Teachers). 

For Students

Exchange Semesters at IMPACCT Partner Universities

First and foremost, the IMPACCT project supports physical exchange semesters at IMPACCT partner universities. These stays receive financial support through the Erasmus+ programme. The administrative process is handled either by Faculty 03 or by Faculty 04 / Catholic Theology.

IMPACCT outgoing students receive intensive support before, during, and after their stay abroad. Here you can find the concept for intercultural preparation, support during the stay, and follow-up reflection.

Virtual International Learning Opportunities

We warmly invite you to take part in our virtual international course offerings. These events give you the opportunity to connect virtually with international students and/or instructors from the comfort of your own home, offering a chance to broaden your horizons and gain new perspectives.

Participating not only helps you develop intercultural skills but also allows you to expand your network and improve your language abilities. It can support your decision on whether to pursue a stay abroad and help you determine which country might be the best fit. It also serves as excellent preparation for an upcoming international experience.

Final Theses

As part of the project, you have the opportunity to write a state examination thesis with an international comparative perspective on one of the following topics:

• Inclusion
• Interculturality
• Peace
• Justice
• Interreligious dialogue

Alongside supervision by a lecturer at a German university, a semester abroad can give you the opportunity to conduct your own surveys or analyses in one of our partner countries and connect with researchers and instructors there.

For Instructors and Researchers

The project offers the following opportunities for your involvement in teaching and research:

• Joint implementation of virtual international courses (e.g., following the COIL concept – Collaborative Online International Learning)
• Co-supervision of theses with an international comparative perspective on the project’s core themes: inclusion, interculturality, peace, justice, and interreligious dialogue
• Collaborative conceptual, theoretical, and empirical research on topics such as virtual international teaching, the internationalization of teacher education, or the project’s key focus areas listed above
• Guest lectureships at a German university focusing on at least one of the project’s core themes listed above

International online lecture series in the winter semester 2026/27: Being Human - Remaining Human: International Perspectives on 'Bildung', Peace, Justice, and Inclusion.

International Teacher Education: Future Skills Forum (winter semester 2026/27) – The Future Skills Forum is a joint series of events organized by several university campuses in collaboration with projects funded by the DAAD’s Lehramt.International programme, including the LiMa project. Starting in the winter semester 2025/26, digital lectures or workshops on the topic of future skills in teacher education are held every semester. The series is dedicated to future-oriented and internationally focused teacher education and addresses current challenges and innovations. It offers inspiration and opportunities for exchange on key future skills that are crucial for the teachers of tomorrow.
