Lecture and Discussion with
Hubertus Buchstein (Uni Greifswald)
"Enduring Enmity: The Story of Otto Kirchheimer and Carl Schmitt"
In the framework of the Giessen Political Theory Colloquium, together with the GGS Section "Human Rights and Democracy", Hubertus Buchstein will present and discuss with us his new book on the legal scholar and political scientist Otto Kirchheimer and his relation to his early mentor Carl Schmitt. Buchstein will shed light on the contradictuous relation between between the socialist critic fleeing from National Socialist Germany and Schmitt who became the most prominent legal theorist of this era in Germany. Although their relationship is often regarded as relatively well, given the political tensions, Buchstein claims that it is better characterized as "Enduring Enmity".
The book was published by transcript in 2024 and is freely accesible as open access publication: https://www.transcript-verlag.de/978-3-8376-6470-6/enduring-enmity/?c=311000242
We invite all interested scholars, colleagues and students to join the discussion on-site or online. Please register with Hannes Kaufmann (hannes.s.kaufmann@sowi.uni-giessen.de)
