Summer semester 2023
Unconditional Basic Income - Theories & Practices Wed 8-10h, campus Phil II, room E201
(Seminar in English; BA Social Sciences Modul M13 + International Students)
This seminar provides an introduction to theories and practices of - what is commonly referred to as - Unconditional Basic Income (in German: Bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen) from a Political Science perspective. Hence, we focus on the relationship between the individual and the state (rather than on sher economic figures).
The course is divided in three parts. In the first part, we explore the concept of Unconditional Basic Income in the understanding of Philippe Van Parijs and the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). Here, we trace the historical roots of this idea, its political justifications and how it relates to the conventional welfare regimes we currently find in advanced capitalist democracies. In the second part, we set the concept of Unconditional Basic Income in relation to its main alternative proposals. In the third part, we turn to practical implementations such as pilot projects, experiments and private initiatives.
The seminar will be based on text-related discussions in the first part and student presentations in the second and third part. Course language is English, which also applies to written contributions.
Requirements:
Regular and active participation in the seminar sessions, independent reading of the seminar literature and a short input presentation (not graded) on a concrete example - applies to everyone.
Assessment:
Coursework (Hausarbeit; max. 5.000 words, graded) to be submitted by the end of the semester (30 September 2023) - applies only to BA Social Sciences students taking this course as Seminar I (= where the coursework acts as Modulabschlussprüfung/end-of-module-examination) and to International students.
International students are more than welcome! :)
If you have questions regards ECTS etc., please contact me beforehand: Niklas.Ferch@sowi.uni-giessen.de
