Classical Archaeology at JLU Gießen

We explore the history of Greece and Rome through their material cultures in all their facets: from studying objects of everyday life and artworks to unearthing new finds at archaeological sites and curating artefacts in regular special exhibitions of our Collection of Classical Antiquities. Research-based learning and the preparation for future professional fields play a particularly important role.

Through interdisciplinary and international cooperation, we maintain contact with a broad scientific network. At all levels of training, our events offer the opportunity to critically engage with the methodological toolbox of Classical Archaeology, to get to know important ancient sites on regular field trips, and to gain practical knowledge in curating exhibitions and in field research as well as in project management and in the interaction with other fields of research in our interdisciplinary seminars and on excavations. We put particular emphasis on individual supervision to ensure a successful education.
