Advanced Internship (Praxissemester) at the English Department
The Praxissemester is a substantial part of any teaching degree (Lehramt) at JLU. This page informs students on how the Praxissemester module is structured at the English department.
The advanced internship (Praxissemester) at the English Department consists of five parts over two semesters: a preparatory seminar and the TEFL seminar “Understanding the EFL Classroom” in semester one, the actual internship at school, the evaluation seminar and the TEFL seminar “Professionalisierung” in semester two.
Specific TEFL seminars during the Praxissemester
Primary school teaching students doing their internship in English will attend both TEFL seminars. Aspiring secondary and grammar school teachers and special needs educators choosing to do their Praxissemester in English, will only take “Understanding the EFL Classroom” in semester one of the Praxissemester module. L2 and L3 students completing their school internship in a subject other than English, will only take “Professionalisierung” in semester two.
In “Understanding the EFL Classroom”, students will link research and practice. They will design a micro study which they will conduct and evaluate during the practical component of their Praxissemester. The evaluation of the micro study will form part of the portfolio.
During “Professionalisierung”, students will reflect on their experiences during the practical part of the Praxissemester based on specific criteria. Moreover, the seminar further guides students in the development of their professional identity as well as their teaching skills.
As the seminars prepare students for the practical component by developing a research question and micro study on the one hand and build on the practical experience on the other hand, it is essential that they are studied in the specified order.
