GINresSheep

Establishment of a nationwide breeding programme for the sustainable control of gastrointestinal nematode
(GIN) infection in sheep

Infection with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is one of the biggest problems in sheep grazing, also in terms of the economy. In Germany, too, the development of drug resistance in GIN is on the rise. In addition, antiparasitic drugs can only be used to a very limited extent in organic farming. The existing genetic resistance or susceptibility of sheep to GIN can be determined on the basis of various phenotypic parameters. Unlike in Germany, such phenotypes are already being used successfully in other countries to select sheep with lower susceptibility to GIN. The aim of this project is therefore to combat gastrointestinal nematode infestation in sheep in Germany in a sustainable manner by establishing a nationwide, innovative breeding programme.
