Economic assessment of biodynamic farms and value chains - Biodynamic Economy (BDEconomy)

The project investigates the effects of the concept of biodynamic and associative management in the practice of biodynamic farms and value chains on the economic performance and resilience of farms and value chains. It consists of two doctoral theses at the University of Gießen (value chain level) and the University of Warsaw/Juchowo (agricultural enterprise level).

The work packages of the JLU consist of:

  • Literature research: value creation in the context of associative economic forms, findings from transformation research on agricultural and food systems (focus: value chain) and market-related research on the biodynamic sector;
  • investigation of challenges and mechanisms in: generation and distribution of value added along the value chain; fair/appropriate pricing; strengthening of value chains and regional economic resilience (actor and business network level);
  • Case studies on biodynamic value chains
  • Methodology: interviews, focus groups and market data analysis.

Furthermore, three international research seminars (workshops) on the socio-economics of biodynamic farming in Poland will be organised and conducted by the overall project team.

Project partners: The project is coordinated by the Forschungsring e.V., Darmstadt, and is carried out in cooperation with Demeter Poland and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
