Getting Off to a Good Start: Using Reference Managers for Your Research (Zotero)

Dr. Isabella Maria Engberg, 21 October 2025, 11:00-12:30

Sign-up here.

Recommended for all new PhD candidates joining the GCSC and IPP in 2025, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to reference management using Zotero. Starting early ensures that no valuable knowledge you’ve gathered is lost—during your PhD or even after. We’ll explore key questions such as:

  • What is a healthy research hygiene?
  • What specific information is required for citations, regardless of style standard?
  • How can you efficiently save your thoughts on each article, book chapter, film, website, or novel?
  • How do you revisit a topic years later with ease?

Please bring a laptop, as we’ll cover everything from installing Zotero and importing article metadata to tagging your research and generating automatic citations in Word.

Style and Voice

Presenter: Dr. Denise Wong, 02 December 2025, 11:00-12:30

Sign-up here.

What makes academic discourse more than legible and persuasive, but also distinctive? And what, if any, role might (in)consistencies in rhythm, syntax, and tone play? This interactive workshop focuses on style and voice as something cultivated through reading attentively as much as writing actively. Participants will be asked to bring a ready-typed short paragraph of no more than 200 words from an academic book or article written in a style they admire.

(N.B. Please do not share the source or the author of the paragraph, or the passage itself, with either myself or any of the participants in the session).
