Workshop “Presenting at Conferences”
Carolin Jesussek, Hannah Mansour
Your paper has been accepted for a conference – that’s great news! If you are interested in the steps that come next, from preparing your presentation to finding your presentation style, then this workshop is for you.
We will address your experiences so far, time management, body language and voice, hooking your audience, how to navigate questions during the Q&A, and connecting with other researchers during the coffee breaks.
As the workshop gives the opportunity to practise parts of your presentation, potentially for the summer schools this semester, we ask you to bring up to 5 minutes’ worth of material that you are willing to share with the participants.
This workshop is intended to be a space to ask any questions about what to expect at academic conferences. It is open to all IPP and GCSC members, for those, who have not yet attended a conference and for those who are looking to improve their skills.

Workshop “Giving and Receiving Feedback”
Prof. Dr. Kirsten von Hagen, Carolin Jesussek
From working with your supervisor’s comments to responding to a peer’s suggestions on a draft, there are plenty of opportunities to receive valuable feedback as a PhD. You might also find yourself on the other side, being asked to give feedback to your peers. How do you best provide comments and questions for them? What are important aspects to give feedback on? What kinds of language can you use to communicate feedback effectively? What specific questions can you ask to guide your readers feedback? These are the questions that will be answered during this workshop. Drawing on participants’ own experiences, we will explore what constitutes constructive feedback and how to decide on which suggestions to incorporate. This workshop is open to all IPP and GCSC members.

With Fresh Eyes: Reframing Your Dissertation Topic for Different Contexts
Carolin Jesussek
In everyday life, you are constantly asked about your dissertation topic – but the audience is always different and so is your response. During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to reframe your dissertation topic for a variety of contexts: a two-minute pitch addressing another researcher at a conference, an informal conversation with people outside academia, hooking a broad audience (science communication, dissertation prizes), and translating your research into something creative. We will experiment with different formats and draw out what it is that intrigues and motivates you about your research – and how to communicate this to others.
The workshop is an opportunity to engage creatively with your dissertation topic, whether you are just getting started or have been working on your PhD for a few years. It is open to all IPP and GCSC members.
