Course description

As a doctoral candidate or as a postdoc, you often already have management and leadership responsibilities; examples include working with student assistants, helping with the coordination of project teams or leading a junior research group. In this workshop, you will learn about the basics of staff management and leadership in an academic context, setting you up both for more effectiveness in your current activities and for future positions of responsibility.

Topics covered include:

  • Staff management and leadership in an academic context: What does it mean and imply?
  • Starting with myself: How to align my goals, values and regular activities
  • How to set shared goals and how to establish good structures and routines
  • Open and respectful communication
  • How to deal with conflicts
  • Management, leadership and career development: How to bring them together

In addition, there is room for other questions and concerns you may have. Depending on the group, the workshop will take place in either English or German, or indeed in both languages.
